(Cash − reserve) ÷ (payments − receipts)

General information only. This simple calculation assumes receipts and payments stay constant. It does not model the timing of individual payments, seasonal trading, future financing, unexpected expenses or a changing tax balance. Use the same currency for every input. Inputs are calculated in your browser and are not submitted.

The background

Use a scenario, not a promise.

Runway is cash above your reserve divided by the net amount leaving each month. It’s a quick way to see how sensitive the business is to lower receipts or higher costs — not a forecast.

Questions

What should count as cash available today?

Cash you can actually use: bank balances net of cheques already written. Leave out undrawn credit lines and money owed to you that hasn’t arrived — try them as separate scenarios instead.

Why receipts and payments rather than sales and expenses?

Runway is about cash. Sales invoiced but not collected, and expenses billed but not yet paid, don’t move your bank balance until they’re settled.

Does the calculator include tax?

Only if you include tax payments in your monthly payments. It doesn’t know your instalments, HST remittances or payroll source deductions, so add them if they’re part of your monthly outflow.
